Hi, I’m Yan Arsenault, and I lead Trust Point’s Investment Team.
Each quarter, our team shares its perspective on the markets and economy through our Market Point newsletter. I’d like to highlight a few key takeaways from the third quarter.
The global economy has continued to show resilience despite persistent inflation, elevated energy prices, and geopolitical uncertainty.
In the U.S., strong consumer spending and business investment have been important drivers of growth, helping the economy maintain its momentum despite these challenges.
In equity markets, we’ve seen a shift from last quarter. Market gains have become more concentrated among a smaller group of large technology companies, while many other stocks have lagged. Despite this, strong corporate earnings, supported in part by continued investment in artificial intelligence, remain an important driver of market performance.
This reinforces why diversification remains so important, particularly when market leadership can shift from one quarter to the next.
In fixed income, rising interest rates have created short-term challenges for bond prices, but they’ve also provided more attractive yields. For long-term investors, this creates opportunities to generate more income and bring greater stability to their portfolios. Higher yields also provide a larger cushion against potential price declines if interest rates rise further.
Looking ahead, the midterm elections could bring short-term market volatility, but history shows that elections offer little guidance on future returns. Rather than positioning portfolios around election expectations or outcomes, we’ll continue to focus on fundamentals and make adjustments guided by our disciplined, research-driven investment process.
